The Nazis distributed this poster – Arbeit und Brot durch Liste 1 (Work and Bread through Slate 1) – during the October 1932 German parliamentary elections. In 1932, Germany was a democracy where citizens had access to diverse sources of information and the Nazis actively competed with other political parties for support and votes. Advertises a cause
To prepare for its electoral campaigns, the Nazi Party conducted grassroots public opinion research to determine what issues were of crucial importance to local voters. They probed the needs, hopes, and fears of blue- and white-collar workers, the middle class, women, farmers, and youth. Nazi propagandists then carefully tailored their themes, messages, and language accordingly. In this way, the Nazis succeeded in playing on emotions to broaden their constituency and siphon off support from their competitors. This poster literally depicts Nazi arms handing out tools (i.e., providing jobs to the millions of unemployed Germans). It advertises the Nazis as the one party which will create jobs and put food on the plates of the German people.
